Functional Integration® - (Touch Based Movement Education)
A human being's ability to learn is unique among animal species. Unlike other creatures who are born with their survival behaviors pre-programmed, our posture, habits, skills, and even our physical difficulties are the direct result of what we have learned throughout our lives.
We develop, quite literally, based on our lived experience.
Because our brains adapt so perfectly to our surroundings, they also adapt to our struggles. When we deal with persistent physical pain, injury, or mental and emotional difficulties, our nervous system attempts to protect us.
Over time, the brain begins to treat this restricted, protective state as the "new normal." It stops looking for alternative ways to move or hold itself.
When we are in pain day after day, we lose our sense of possibility. We lose hope, assuming that we are simply broken or that this is just how our lives must be.
Through educational touch it is possible for us to change and improve at any point in life. This is due to our capacity for new experiences to effect us and how we move forward.
This is where the power of touch based movement education comes in.
When you experience a new, unexpected physical sensation - such as a tight muscle suddenly unwinding, or your ribcage gently expanding to let in a full breath - your nervous system receives a physical fact. It is not an intellectual concept or a positive thought; it is an undeniable physical reality.
In that moment, your brain realizes: "This can change."
The experience of a new alternative instantly reawakens possibility and hope. It is proof to your entire system that you are not static, that your patterns are not permanent, and that relief is possible right now.
Functional Integration®, then, is a process designed to help human beings rediscover this innate ability to change. By using precise, gentle, and supportive touch, it communicates directly with your nervous system to reorganize how you are put together - restoring your coordination, your physical ease, and your belief in what is possible.
By feeding your nervous system with highly specific new movement it can begin to make deep neurological changes in how you are organised for life.
Your Brain is Plastic
With this process it is possible to illuminate biological blindspots. When new parts of us, that we were previously unaware of, get brought into our action, it can give us a whole new sense of what is possible.
Discovering New Ability
Your personal dignity is of the upmost consideration in one-to-one Feldenkrais lessons and we would work together to find how you can organise yourself well for your daily activities or personal interests.
Professional Consultation
What to expect
In an Individual lesson we begin with a brief conversation about your current physical experience, daily activities, and what you’d like to improve - whether that's releasing persistent tension, recovering movement after an injury, or refining a specific skill. We’ll observe how you stand, walk, or perform simple, familiar movements to see how your entire body coordinates support.
You will lie fully clothed on a low, comfortable padded table (or sit in a chair, depending on what we are working on). Using gentle, precise touch and slow, non-invasive movements, we'll guide your skeleton and muscles into subtle movement patterns. The touch is informational rather than corrective: it gives your nervous system direct feedback on where you are holding strain and communicates lighter, more efficient ways to organize your structure.
Towards the end of the lesson, we will take time to bring the lesson back into upright posture. We’ll test familiar movements - like walking, standing, or turning - so you can feel the immediate changes in your contact with the ground, breath, and spatial awareness.

Joe has a fantastic understanding of biomechanics and subtle movement. In our session, he helped me address a long-standing pattern where my right side felt tighter and less coordinated than my left. After the session my sides felt completely rebalanced.
Having worked with Joe several times, I’m always struck by the precision of his Functional Integration® work. His touch is extraordinarily gentle yet clear. A wonderfully skilled practitioner.
After my hip replacement Joe has done a fantastic job of gently teaching my body how to rebalance and walk easily again. I like the way he works and would recommend him to anyone who needs help encouraging their system to settle and heal.
