The Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais Method® is a system of self education through movement.

It is not an exercise program, a stretching routine, or a massage.

Instead, it uses directed attention and gentle movement sequences to upgrade the way your brain coordinates your body.

It was developed by Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais - a physicist, mechanical engineer, and martial artist - who realized that the most direct way to change how we think, feel, and act is to change how we move.

The method operates on a simple biological principle: that your nervous system is adaptable, and is constantly learning. By feeding your brain high-quality sensory information through movement, you can unlearn the deeply ingrained habits that limit your physical and mental freedom.

How does it work?

Reducing the "Background Noise"

To change a habit, you must first be able to feel it. If your system is working to hard and you are constantly contracting your muscles, your nervous system is probably too overwhelmed to notice subtle changes, and is therefore less able to change.

Feldenkrais lessons use slow movement, with attention to quieten the nervous system. In physics and physiology, this relies on a principle called the Weber-Fechner Law: the less effort you exert, the finer the details you can detect.

How this achieves Homeostatic Regulation

By lowering the intensity of your muscular effort, you signal to your brain that it is safe to down-regulate. You step off the accelerator of the sympathetic nervous system ("fight or flight") and allow your parasympathetic system ("rest and digest") to take over, restoring natural metabolic and emotional balance.

Clarifying the "Self-Image"

Your brain holds a literal map of your body in its motor cortex. If you do not move a part of yourself - like your middle spine, your ribs, or your pelvis - for years, that area becomes "blurred" or entirely forgotten on your internal map.

Through highly specific and varied movement sequences, Feldenkrais lessons illuminate these blind spots. You learn to trace the skeletal connections through the whole of yourself, and start to move with efficiency and ease.

How this supports A Healthy Sense of Self

A clear personality requires a clear physical container. When you can physically feel the structural support of your skeleton, you no longer rely on muscular tension to protect yourself. You develop a literal, structural "backbone."

This physical clarity translates directly into healthy personal boundaries - you know exactly where you stand, making it natural to navigate through space without collapse or unnecessary effort.

Eliminating Parasitic Tension

When we do things habitually, we often use too much effort. For example, when you reach for a glass, do you also unconsciously tighten your jaw, your neck, or your toes? This useless, extra effort is called parasitic tension. It actively fights the movement you are trying to make.

Feldenkrais teaches your brain to distribute work evenly across your entire system, making movement beautifully efficient.

How this Frees Up Resources & Develops Potency

When you stop fighting your own movement, your action becomes incredibly light and powerful. The massive amount of biological energy that was wasted on parasitic tension is suddenly returned to you.

This is how you recover potency - as it leaves you with a surplus of physical vitality and mental bandwidth to invest in your creative life and interests.

By refining your self knowledge, you unwind the foundation of your limitations. What you are left with is the mature, potent self - ready to act with ease, clarity, and intention.
